What is the “Book of Life,” mentioned in the Bible?
Revelation 20:12-16 says, “I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books. The sea gave up its dead, and death and the grave gave up their dead. And all were judged according to their deeds. Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death. And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.”
There’s a lot of talk about making our mark in this world and leaving a lasting legacy that we could be proud of. If the Bible is true (which I believe 100% it is!), I think our #1 priority, along with our #1 objective in our lifetime should be to ensure that our names are written in the Book Of Life! And the great news is, that God has made this all important decision of where we will live throughout all eternity available to everyone to decide!! My strong recommendation is to choose wisely, and not to take lightly this extremely consequential choice that you need to make while there’s still time.
The Book Of Life, mentioned many times in the Scriptures, is the set of names of those who will live with God forever in heaven. It is the roll of those who have done what Romans 10:9-10 identifies as being necessary to be saved … as Paul proclaims, “If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.”
Luke 10:17-20 says, “When the seventy-two disciples returned, they joyfully reported to him, “Lord, even the demons obey us when we use your name!” “Yes,” he told them, “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning! Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you. But don’t rejoice because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered in heaven.”
Can you think of anything more important, more pressing, or of more value than having your name registered (in the Book Of Life) in heaven? I can’t, and it would be a great blessing for me if you’re ever interested in learning more about what the Bible says about both heaven and hell.
